Denver Union Station Receives 2014 AIA Honor Award

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) selected the Denver Union Station Neighborhood Transformation to receive a 2014 Institute Honor Award for Regional & Urban Design, recognizing excellence in urban design, regional and city planning, and community development. The redevelopment of the former rail yards at Denver Union Station transforms 14 blocks in downtown Denver into a showcase for the power of transit-oriented urban design. The 42-acre master plan knits together light rail, commuter rail, and buses into a unified and cohesive intermodal transportation hub. The public realm further facilitates connectivity, including promenades and streetscapes, plazas, urban gardens, and expanded bike facilities. Significant new public spaces include Wynkoop Plaza, the 17th Street Promenade and Gardens, and the Light Rail Plaza. Integrated land use and transportation infrastructure support more than 4 million square feet of mixed-use urban infill. This substantial public investment has catalyzed an unprecedented wave of private-sector activity, with over $1 billion in new projects shaping a transit-oriented precinct and new urban neighborhood.
