The newly expanded UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law by Ratcliff Architects includes a major addition that houses efficient library stack space and state of the art classroom / lecture facilities in two below-grade levels, with a new cafĂ© and student gathering space at grade. The landscape and open space design provides two shaded courtyards with gardens, seating areas, and outdoor eating space. Additionally, a rooftop garden and event terrace – for social gatherings and teaching – capitalizes on brilliant westward views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. This multipurpose terrace is defined by a series of sloping planters with low-water-use succulent gardens and integrated benches. A new west terrace also enhances the entrance to the school and its public image on College Avenue Plaza – a key campus open space – and creates a casual gathering place for Law students and faculty. A bicycle parking court, the protection of several existing specimen trees, a new streetscape along Bancroft Street, and a new storm water storage cistern that augments the UCB system for supplying campus irrigation needs are all part of the revisioning of the College Avenue plaza and frontage.
