The new hospital tower for the NYU Langone Hospital includes a 1-acre ground level arrival plaza, a 26,000 sf outdoor terrace on the 7th level overlooking the East River and smaller terrace for the pediatrics wing overlooking the city. The ground level includes an arrival garden and plaza that blends seamlessly and safely next to vehicular arrival and drop-off. Resiliency planning was incorporated into the landscape by integrating a retractable flood barrier set within the ground level plaza. The 7th level terrace includes gardens, outdoor dining and spill-out space for conferences and fund-raising events as well as dedicated outdoor space specifically designed for pediatric patients with playful gardens and a variety of interactive elements. The unique micro-climatic conditions on the upper terrace inspired the program zoning as well as three different zones for the selection of plants: sunny, wind-tolerant native coastal plantings; seaside garden plantings; and shade loving, low height, highly textured plantings
