First and foremost about connection, Crescent Park reconnects New Orleans and its communities to the riverfront, granting unparalleled physical and visual access to the river and creating an environment for locals and visitors to interact and enjoy the essence of the City. The park (with Sir David Adjaye, Michael Maltzan Architecture and Eskew Dumez Ripple) transforms surplus Port of New Orleans wharves and derelict railroad sidings into a public landscape, including two bridges, a wharf apron, and an at-grade flood gate opening, which provides access across the floodwall and rail tracks. Piety Bridge arcs over floodwall and rail to connect the Bywater neighborhood to the Piety Gardens and a transformed 26,000sf Piety Wharf. The Mandeville Crossing brings visitors down into the adaptively re-purposed Mandeville Wharf – a 52,000sf open air event space within the shell of the former wharf shed. Crescent Park is the first phase of the ‘Reinventing the Crescent’ master plan (with TEN Arquitectos, Chan Krieger and Eskew Dumez Ripple) for 6 miles of open space and urban redevelopment along the Mississippi River.
