The master plan for the University of Utah, done with SOM, provides a long range, implementable plan for the growth of the 1500-acre, 30,000 student campus. Winner of a SCUP Merit Award, the master plan vision is focused on key enhancements that will transform a commuter-centric campus into one that supports all aspects of campus life. New academic infill buildings, centrally located athletic facilities, and open spaces all knit together to improve the social heart of the campus. A key aspect of the open space plan is to convert a central area of parking lots and golf course into terraced recreation fields that along with a new Student Center, will become a core part of student life and campus identity. The Master Plan supports the University’s goal of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and interaction and features the campus as a destination for the public with improvements in functional and sustainable transportation. The landscape plan for the campus capitalizes on its dramatic natural setting at the base of the Wasatch Mountains, creates open spaces that provide a connective fabric for campus life, and integrates campus wide sustainability measures that will fulfill the University of Utah’s desire to become a leader in environmental stewardship.
